Adele released Chasing Pavements on her first album, 19,
in 2009. At first listen the song may be about love, but like a lot of music,
it’s open to interpretation. This is one of my favorite songs by her, because I
find it so relatable for many other reasons.
The song presents the argument that whatever decision
she makes, giving up or staying on a path that may lead to nowhere (chasing
pavements), the choice is her own. One of my favorite verses is when she says
“If I’m wrong, I am right/ don’t need to look no further”. Whatever choice she
has to make, it’s up to her, so there is no way that she can make a mistake.
She doesn’t need to look for other options, and she knows what she needs to do,
she’s just having an internal argument about what’s right for her since she
doesn’t know the outcome of either choice.
