Calvin and Hobbes is a popular comic for having hidden
messages. This message here is obvious, showing that when you think about it,
war is pointless. The comic raises a good question in the beginning when Hobbes
asks why they play war instead of peace. It shows that kids are shown early on
that violence is more fun, because there is a lack of role models demonstrating
peace. It also shows how common it is (and how history has taught us) that
Americans are portrayed as the heroic ones vs a “Godless communist oppressor”
because that’s what we’re taught when we’re young. In the last 3 panels alone
you get the message of the whole comic. Both sides shoot, and end up with
losses, therefore no one really wins. When you take out the reason for fighting, the
actions don’t make much sense.
