Song

Blowing in the wind  Bob Dylan

How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, and how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind

Yes, and how many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea?
Yes, and how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, and how many times can a man turn his head
And pretend that he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind

Yes, and…

Yes, and how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, and how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind

Written by Nobel Prize winner Bob Dylan, Blowin in the wind is one of the song which has the strongest impact on the whole world. The song was written by Bob Dylan at 1962 and was widely spread to the whole country. It was the time of Vietnam war, during when young people was drafted to serve the country while they are already doubting whether they should do so. At the time of country music’s golden age, the song was popular among college students, who’s trying to use country music to express their idea. The song stand against the idea of “being a man” or being a martyr to give their to the war. It was just like a rebellion against the authority who’s asking people to involve themselves in the war, the idea expressed in the song had been used in many circumstances all over the world. Bob Dylan asked a couple of ‘wired ’ questions like how many times must the cannon balls fly before they're forever banned and asking when can people hear other’s crying. Innocent people dies as cannon balls fly. Those questions contains a very strong emotion to make people think about those brutalities of war and victims’ suffering. It seemed that all of those question have a very easy answer—and it’s quite obvious. People are just pretending that they don’t know and ignoring those sounds. The shaking voice of Bob Dylan or Peter Paul & Mary along with a slow, sad melody are just expressing those helplessness and sadness created by the war—and not just war. When people are facing injustice, unfairness and suffering, those lyrics and melody can still give us empathy. Yes, the answer is blowing in the wind, in the broad light, everybody can see it—as long as you care. The song still have a strong influence today, it was widely used by films(like Forrest Gump) and in a variety of occasions.

Advertisements

 Advertisements in 30 year

I’m choosing apple as an example because it’s almost the first word bumped into my head when I heard the term of advertisement. It’s also because the time: 30 years: silicon valley’s rise had taken place in past 30 years. And apple’s exporting American culture to the whole world like no other tech company can in those past years, and even through Apple’s advertisement seemed to be in the same style all the time and it’s classic and fashionable even in 1984,there were a bunch of changes had taken place.

First thing is the style. Comparing to the drawing icon, apple changed its icon to industrial style. Same changes happened in the advertisement they made. While emphasizing the idea, apple are now focusing on their products and what the products can do. Comparing to celebrities in the famous think different advertisement and the sportswoman in “1984”, now the characters in apple’s advertisement feels more like someone in our daily lives. It feels like the advertisements are changing from 2D to 3D and looks fancier.

The last row showed that advertisement in Japan and Chinese speaking area( including mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Singapore) When watching the advertisements on TV, we can also noticed that apple’s advertisements are now usually coming up with people with diverse cultural background. In the age of globalization, the American culture have more connection with the world(Even the world other then the western world) then ever before, and it’s been totally different from 30yrd before.

Barbie

Non-traditional Barbie.

As far as I’m concerned, Barbie got so many categories ranging at a variety of costumes as well as different looking (like the outfits of different races\nationality) It was always considered that Barbie should be young and beautiful as it stands for the culture which always emphasize individual’s excellence pretty much in every material field. It’s often Fancy cloths, gorgeous looking, attractive body shape and etc. It’s understandable that the “fat Barbie” was categorized as a non-traditional Barbie because obesity was usually considered as the opposite of beauty and excellence. From my point of view, the overweight Barbie does not imply obesity is standing for beauty or encourage people to gain weight. It looks more like something ironic if we take it negatively—the Barbie doesn’t have the same nice face as the traditional. And it was made in to the unbeautiful side of “obesity”. Probably the one who designed hadn’t even tried to make it beautiful. However, if it was taken positively and since Barbie always stands for the “good” sorts of lifestyles, making obsessed Barbie could also means that the mass culture is accepting the overweight group or people as part of ‘beautiful’ and ‘fancy’ lifestyle. As something presents our value and being role model of children, obsessed Barbie showed that the mass culture has been accepting a wider range of elements like the beauty of the overweighed people. It could be really helpful if it’s taken into good use.

comic strip panel

The comic strip panel I chose was from DC’S New 52: Forever Evil. As we all know, superman and Batman are the icon of a bunch of superheroes as they were created and developed during the period of great depression and getting more and more famous after. At that time, the crime rates keep going high and the economy crisis are still there, not to mention the terror of world war II. Then there comes the golden age of superheroes, while every hero stands for justice and seems so perfect and undefeatable. Then the changes occurred and brought superheroes with charms and energy they never had before—they became complicated and started to face their own twisted fate and weakness. Superheroes no long wins forever and villains no longer stands for the “absolute evil”. The heroes became the god among us, with humanity in them. The authors started to discuss humanity and divinity—or superiority presented on heroes. And while the plots and conflicts and getting more and more complicated, the edge of heroes and villains started to disappeared. And while the anthropocentrism’s blooming, Lux Luther was created as an anti-hero. I still got a deep impression on what he said: “When I see you, I see something no man can ever be. I see the end.
The end of our potential. The end of our achievements. Then end of our dreams. You are my nightmare.” It’s no longer about justice. It’s about humanity. So when those anti-heroes keeps coming up, the discussion of justice and humanity has been further then ever. It also presents the different prospective among American. So when an anti-hero, Lex Luther saved Superman, his rival, such heroic move of an anti-hero created so many things to talk and gave us with limitless boundary of imagination on the characters. When the authority’s losing people’s trust, when the edges of heroes and villains starts to disappear, what will people be like? Such kinds of questions also occurs from time to time in our society (Like the Watergate scandal incident)  It represents the mass culture’s confusion and conflicts facing such kind of problems,

Comic Strip

This comic strip does not talk about history specifically but it does talk about new technology and how that clashes with the older generations. In this comic these two older people cannot figure out how to work this new technology. They are interacting by trying to figure out what is going on. I like this comic strip because it shows just how fast technology is changing.

Comic Strip

I chose this comic strip because it has an interesting narrative on self-expectations. The comic features a boy who just scored a B on an assignment and depicts how proud of himself he is. The character also describes how he thinks that his mother will be proud of him for scoring as he did on the assignment. Then the boy's classmate shows that she received a perfect grade on her assignment, which makes him feel bad about his grade.

Comic Strip

I chose this comic because I think it represents important issues in our society about the relationship that Americans have with technology and how that affects our relationships with the people around us. Google is obviously one of the most powerful technology companies in the world and the fact that they are now a part if this girl's life changes the relationship that she has with her boyfriend. Technology has been a beneficial part of a lot of people's lives. However technology allows us to communicate indirectly and become part of another world, this it less necessary for the direct communication skills and other social graces that were once considered very important. The comic is implying that now that she works for google, she has lost some of those capabilities. I think it is sad because our communication skills and relationships with those arounds us are some of the things that make us distinctly human. I feel that I often see a group of people who are together, but they are not interacting because everyone is on their phone, ipad, etc. Technology has obviously brought benefits to our society, but it has also brought some unintended consequences that people should be worried about.

Comic Strip

I chose this comic strip because it shows you that in todays society that you can do a lot of things through apps on your phone and you don't really need any other sources like the tv for the news or the newspaper to see what has been happening in your neighborhood. It shows kind of how much "lazier" we are as a society because we use our phones for almost everything. It kind of also gives a "sexist" appeal to it because they are going to their mom instead of their dad for things like cleaning things and their laundry. In todays culture most kids think that their parents will do everything for them and they don't have as many responsibilities as kids used to even 15 years ago.

"Le Pen is mightier than the sword"

On February 21st of this year, French presidential populist candidate Marine Le Pen visited Lebanon to speak with Sheikh Abdel-Latif Derian the Grand Mufti. However, in order to do so Le Pen was required to wear a headscarf. Le Pen ripostes, "I consider the headscarf a symbol of a woman’s submission." Ben Garrison's political comic speaks out on the actual suppression of women in the religion of Islam; Le Pen's refusal is a symbol of strength and independence. The caption "Le Pen is mightier than the sword" speaks on the violence that radical Islamic terrorism is causing throughout the world today (Sweden, France, Germany, Netherlands), the "pen" is referring to words being more powerful.

Calvin and Hobbes Analysis

Calvin and Hobbes is a popular comic for having hidden messages. This message here is obvious, showing that when you think about it, war is pointless. The comic raises a good question in the beginning when Hobbes asks why they play war instead of peace. It shows that kids are shown early on that violence is more fun, because there is a lack of role models demonstrating peace. It also shows how common it is (and how history has taught us) that Americans are portrayed as the heroic ones vs a “Godless communist oppressor” because that’s what we’re taught when we’re young. In the last 3 panels alone you get the message of the whole comic. Both sides shoot, and end up with losses, therefore no one really wins.  When you take out the reason for fighting, the actions don’t make much sense.

Comic analysis

This comic "gag" depicts five of the republican candidates running in the 2016 election "twerking" for a Mr. Monopoly-like figure. By stripping the candidates down to ladies' underwear and having them "twerk," the drawing implies that the candidates would do just about anything to get money from campaign donors. This comic is a marker of a time in our nation when interest groups and political action committees have had an extreme influence in our elections-giving candidates money if they promise to advance particular issues and pass certain laws. By placing them in women's underwear, the illustrator implies that the candidates will do just about anything for donation money--even things that degrade them rid them of their dignity.  By having the wealthy man say that he is "still deciding," the illustrtator implies that the people do not have as much a say in which candidate is chosen as the wealthy donors in our country do. The comic serves to draw attention to the issue that elections in our country are often "bought," and that the interests of corporations and donors have a very strong influence.

Comic Analysis: Watchmen

Doctor Manhattan is one of the many characters in the comic universe of Watchmen. Watchmen, written by Alan Moore & Illustrated by Dave Gibbons is one of the quintessential graphic novels that helped develop the format. In this three panel strip, Doctor Manhattan is introspectively musing to himself about the life he leads.

Doctor Manhattan who is often debated between whether he is a superhero (man) or a God, often challenges specific moral questions on what is right for humanity. Watchmen focuses on the post WW2/Vietnam War world and war is one of the most contentious topics discussed within the graphic novel.

In the first panel, Manhattan is recollecting the bombings of Hiroshima in Japan and thinking whether or not his powers helped lead to such a thing happening. In the second panel, he begins blaming himself- as if he had some sort of impact on what happened to people in WW2. In the third panel, he asks the question "who makes the world?" which is not only questioning a larger (almost religious question) but also questions himself.

Throughout the graphic novel, Doctor Manhattan confronts moral dilemmas and often struggles to come to a definitive answer on many of the topics. These musings serve as a commentary on our current society. Different political factions and religious ideologies are seen throughout Watchmen making it an intricate read. These three panels highlight some of the contentious ideals held by author Alan Moore and are reflected by a character who truly cannot be defined-- much like society.

Comic Strip Panel Analysis

Image may contain: text

In this Pearls Before Swine Comic, Rat is the President of the United States, and is giving a press conference about his first one hundred days in office. This strip relates to current events in politics today. Rat for example, has always been the kind of character who says whatever is on his mind, and often makes unsavory comments. In this comics universe, he is elected president of the United States as a comparison to our own president and how people often are upset due to his unsavory comments. On the third and fourth panels of this strip, Rat proclaims that putting pineapple on pizza and eating it will be considered a felony. This is in reference to the recent statement made by Icelandic president Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, whom said that if it were up to him, putting pineapple on pizza would be against the law. This incident was in no way meant to be taken seriously and thus has been lightly joked about through media the last few days, and this comic is a reflection of that. By mixing the two topics, of President Trump and outlawing pineapple on pizza, the comic pokes at the left wing idea that Trump is irrational and thus unfit to be president.

Comic Strip Analysis

This comic strip is making an argument about the environment. It is comparing our environmental/climate change problems to the medical field as if it were a disease being diagnosed to someone. It is making the statement that people would rather or are more likely to wait around and see how climate change will affect our environment than to start doing things to fix the problem. People could start being more environmentally friendly, recycle, and take other actions to help see results in the environment, but instead of that they simply just wait around and wait for it to get worse. This comic compares a treatment for a disease to a solution for climate change and uses satire to elicit a reaction in the audience. If a person were diagnosed with a fatal disease, they would never actually "wait around and see" especially when the disease is treatable, so why are people doing that with climate change problems? The author of this comic wants people to realize that our climate change problems are very damaging to our future, but there are actual ways that we can "treat" and solve this problem.

comic strip panel analysis

What I liked about this comic strip panel is the theme the writer is trying to get across while using humor. The theme of this comic strip panel is global warming, specifically how humans are effecting the earth. The writer uses aliens as a humor aspect to talk about the changes on earth that are occurring because of human interactions. The aliens do an inspection on the earth every hundred years and every time they come back, the aliens see that there are less natural preservation than before. An example they use are trees and forest. By using these elements, the writer can show everyone what will happen in the future if people continue to tear up the earth.

The Pursuit of Happiness

Taking a look at the song “Pursuit of Happiness” by Kid Cudi, it clearly focuses on illegal actions and rebellious views. However, I think that’s what makes this song so pleasurable to listen to. Reflecting back on when I was younger, I only truly seemed interested in doing the things I wasn’t allowed to do. Even to this day, I believe there’s some type of rush I get out of doing something for the thrill of it and pure excitement. Now-a-days it’s harder for kids/young adults in our generation to stay entertained and content with things; so I believe these random acts of craziness derive from their own pursuit of happiness.

“Looking ahead no turning back
If I fall if I die
Know I lived it to the fullest
If I fall if I die
Know I lived and missed some bullets”

“I'm on the pursuit of happiness and I know
Everything that's shine ain't always gonna be gold (hey)
I'll be fine once I get it, get it in, I'll be good”

From the lyrics above, Kid Cudi is symbolizing that life will go on no matter what. It doesn’t matter what happens to you in life, but what you do with your life. It’s this optimistic mindset he displays, that gives a feeling of hope. The way he sings is a very relaxed setting, allowing the listener to feel that he’s speaking to you rather preaching to you. Because, once again, we’re a generation full of people who don’t like people told what to do. The chorus I believe is the most effective. Saying that one day he will be happy; and although not everything will be perfect, once he finds true happiness he will be content.

Music

The song Scars to your Beautiful by Alessia Cara has a deeper meaning to it when you listen to the lyrics. It talks about a girl who doesn't think she is good enough and that the way she looks doesn't add up to the standards produced by the media today. If you listen to it closely it says that beauty is deeper than the surface and that there is more to a person than their looks. Its supposed to tell girls that they are better than what society views as the "perfect" girl.

Chasing Pavements- Adele

Adele released Chasing Pavements on her first album, 19, in 2009. At first listen the song may be about love, but like a lot of music, it’s open to interpretation. This is one of my favorite songs by her, because I find it so relatable for many other reasons.

The song presents the argument that whatever decision she makes, giving up or staying on a path that may lead to nowhere (chasing pavements), the choice is her own. One of my favorite verses is when she says “If I’m wrong, I am right/ don’t need to look no further”. Whatever choice she has to make, it’s up to her, so there is no way that she can make a mistake. She doesn’t need to look for other options, and she knows what she needs to do, she’s just having an internal argument about what’s right for her since she doesn’t know the outcome of either choice.

Zombies- Childish Gambino

The song begins with a loud moaning noise and a somber guitar riff to start the song, possibly to go along with the name of the song. It is as if the beginning of the song signals the rise of the dead. Throughout the first verse, it seems to simply be a song about the dead rising, but once the second verse starts, it is clear this song is deeper than that and not about something as trivial as the dead rising. The line "they can smell your money, and they want your soul" starts to paint a picture of what this song is actually about. The "zombies" that Gambino talks about is not an actual zombie, but a representation of consumerism in America. Numerous lines in the song allude to the comparison between zombies and consumerism. "Walking all around us" and "you will find there is no safe place to hide" are both references to how in the form of advertisement, no matter where you go outside, you will always be subjected to consumerism. The words "money" and "profit" are in reference to what is necessary for this to survive; the people's cash. Just like the stereotypical zombie will live off brains, Gambino compares by saying that companies live off of money. The final line of the final verse is "there is no way to stop it" and this ultimately says that it is an inevitable evil.

Mine - Taylor Swift

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPBwXKgDTdE

In The Song "Mine", Taylor Swift is making an argument about the affect that our relationships with our family have on our self worth as well as our future relationships. Even before the song starts the first scene of the music video is the narrator seeing a couple arguing and flashing back to her own parents arguing showing the experiences that she had as a child. Once  the song starts the narrator talks about how she met a boy. In reference to herself she says "I was a flight risk, afraid of fallin'
Wondering why we bother with love, if it never lasts. This clearly shows that her parents obvious, lt tumultuous relationship has given her a lack of confidence in relationships but also in herself.

The narrator
then starts talking about the happy times that her and this boy have together, they go to the beach , she starts staying at his home. She really believes that she has found love and that maybe there is hope in this relationship unlike what she has seen in the past. She says "You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter".  She believes that with this guy she can finally be free and really show her true self. She doesn't have to be guarded to potentially protect herself from being hurt. The fact that she mention's her father being carless points to the fact that she blames him for the dissolving of her parents relationship and she has had a difficult relationship with men in the past. However this man makes her so happy she does believe in love. This boy has made her open up. She tells him about her past and why she is so guarded.  He understands why she is so careful and how much she wants to avoid the same relationship that her parents had "You learn my secrets and figure out why I'm guarded. You say we'll never make my parents' mistakes".

However no relationship is perfect and the narrator and her boyfriend do have an argument "And I remember that fight, two-thirty AM". This where the narrator's  true insecurities and hurt from her childhood come out. As soon as the argument happens, she runs out of the house to avoid the conflict just like she did as a little girl when her parents would argue. She also automatically expects her boyfriend to leave like her father always did "Braced myself for the goodbye, cause that's all I've ever known". This expectations of relationships are learned from childhood. These experiences also gave her lesser self-esteem in thinking that her own relationships wouldn't ever work out because she was the problem. She called herself a "flight risk". However unlike her childhood her boyfriend followed her and promised that he would never leave like her and that they would resolve their issues "You said, "I'll never leave you alone". Fortunately they end up living happily and not facing the heartache, that her parents faced. In conclusion the argument of this song is that the things that we experience in childhood especially relationships have a large impact on our expectations and relationships as adults. Therefore because the narrator had a negative experience as a child she expected that as an adult. Luckily she was able to find happiness with someone who accepted all those flaws and insecurities that she gained as a child.

Beyonce - If I Were A Boy

In Beyonce's 2008 hit song, "If I Were A Boy," Beyonce argues that women are generally given the short end of the stick in relationships, even though more is expected of them than their partners in these relationships. She is asserting that a double standard exists for gender expectations in relationships.

Throughout the song, Beyonce describes the way she would behave if she were a male. She sings, "If I were a boy, I'd roll out of bed in the morning and throw on what I wanted," implying that males aren't held to the same appearance expectations that women are--if she were a male, she could roll out of bed and wear what she wants; as opposed to women, who are expected to always look pretty and put together for their man--a process that often takes a great deal of time and effort.

Beyonce also sings that if she were a boy, she'd "...kick it with who I wanted and never get confronted for it," meaning that men are able to be/sleep with whomever they choose, while women are often criticized and called out for the quality and number of partners that they have in their life. While men can hang out with/sleep with many people and be praised for it, women who engage in these behaviors may be regarded as "slutty" or "whores."

Finally, Beyonce sings, "If I were a boy, I'd put myself first and make the rules as I go... Cause I know that she'd be faithful," meaning that men can generally behave however they like in relationships, and get away with a lot. They are able to think of themselves and their needs first, and their woman will stick with them and be loyal to them no matter what they do--whereas if a woman called all of her own shots and put her needs first, she would probably be regarded as cold and unloving, and the man would probably leave her.

The hypothetical situations that Beyonce presents with her lyrics serve to demonstrate what male privilege can look like in romantic relationships. Hopefully, this song will challenge current relationship expectations for males and females--encouraging equality in effort and empathy.

Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

I believe that Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the most iconic songs of all time. It puts you an a roller coaster of emotions. Just the melody itself is hypnotizing. The way that the song starts of slow with just a piano and drum, then though the song, more instruments are added and then at the climax of the song, an amazing guitar solo. This song has been analyzed many time by people everywhere, and for the most part I believe that Queen was singing about coming out as bisexual which was a really difficult thing to do in the 80's. Freddie Mercury (the writer of the song) never actually explained the meaning of the song. That is why there is so much speculation on what the song was about. The song did take a very long time to create because of the many changes of the style of music that was played. In the end it is a brilliantly written song that is very catchy, and one of the tops songs of it's time.

The Beach Boys - Help Me, Rhonda

Over the distinct harmonizing whistling, "Help Me, Rhonda" begins into the first verse almost instantly as the song starts. Well since she put me down 'I've been out doin' in my head / I come in late at night and in the mornin' I just lay in bed'. The upbeat piano and a tambourine are added onto the whistling to give it a distinct joyful tone. The joyful tone juxtaposes the lyrics, since by the first verse the narrator is talking about his feelings after being broken up with.

The song continues into the pre-chorus – 'Well, Rhonda you look so fine (look so fine) / And I know it wouldn't take much time / For you to help me Rhonda /Help me get her out of my heart'. The narrator is now talking to another girl, a girl who he thinks could help him get over his breakup. Him asking for help, alludes to him wanting to spend time with Rhonda in a way much like he did with his ex-girlfriend.

Once the chorus hits, the instrumentation is at the height of it's cheerful tone. Harmonizing vocals echo throughout the chorus, continually repeating 'help me, Rhonda'. The repetition adds to the juxtaposition between the lyrics and the instrumentation. Help me, Rhonda' is seen as a cry for help. Yet the instrumentation is joyful with twangy guitar and the very necessary 'bow bow bow' vocals reminiscent of any popular doo-wop song a decade before "Help Me, Rhonda" was released.

On the surface, "Help Me, Rhonda" is a popular hit with a cheery tone aimed at radio play. But like much of the Beach Boys discography, "Help Me, Rhonda" uses oversimplification in lyrical structure and cheerful instrumentation to make comments about relationships. Whether this song is echoes the voice of a generation or on the frailty of love, "Help Me, Rhonda" showcases the distinct songwriting of the Beach Boys.

I'll Be Missing You - Puff Daddy

The artist formerly known as 'Puff Daddy' released this song in 1997 as a part of his second studio album, No Way Out. 'I'll Be Missing You' was written about the passing of his colleague and close personal friend, Christoper Wallace. I think that this song is making an argument about how you deal with personal loss.

Sean Combs (Puff Daddy, P.Diddy, Diddy) is saying that although you have lost the person, you must continue on living your life. I completely agree with this sentiment. Puff Daddy says, "Life ain't always what it seems to be, words can't express what you mean to me. And though you're gone, we still a team. Through your family, I'll fulfill your dreams. In the future I can't wait to see, if you'll open up the gates for me."

I chose this quote because I believe that it perfectly depicts the relationship that the two had; They were more brothers than friends. When you lose someone who is very close to you, you can physically feel their presence abscond as you continue your everyday life. You forget they are gone, and wonder what they are doing, and then reality sets in. Although this seems quite dark, "I'll be Missing You" shares that there is a time for sadness, and then it's time to move on and cherish the memories you have of that person.

Boston - Long Time

Boston - Long Time (1:55)

The song opens to a drum and guitar riff like a person waking up to a realization.  The song appears to be about a person who has been settled down in life for a long time and comes to realize they want to move on.  The song picks up after their departure; when he's on the highway "chasin' a dream."

He wishes he could say something to the one he's leaving behind, but he's leaving anyways.  The song breaks down into a steady pace during this moment.  He tells his significant other that they'll eventually move on.

It's been a while since he has left home, he's been on the road for a long time.  The guitar solo queues in, also indicating an inner struggle.  Being on the road for so long and chasing a dream that he may never find would be lonely and exhausting; he's beginning to miss his lover.  He wants to forget about her, but it's impossible.

Eventually, he realizes, again, that time isn't on his side.  The music picks up again.  So, he figures it's best to just continue moving on, regardless of his feelings.  And though he "may never find it" he's "always just behind it."  The song fades out with the lyrics "Takin' my time, just movin' along" as if to suggest that he hasn't found it and probably never will.

Music

What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong is a very inspirational song because it focuses on the beauty and good things in the world. It argues that despite all the bad things that might be happening on a daily basis, the world is still an amazing and beautiful place. The song focuses on the little things in life like two friends shaking hands, blue skies, and the colors of the rainbow. Armstrong aims to point out the beauty of these things in life that everyone takes advantage of daily. The music is upbeat enough that it is inspiring and keeps the listeners attention the whole time. The title of the son itself, "What a Wonderful World," conveys a message to listeners to pay attention to the world around them and never take anything for granted, even the simplest things in life.

Music

The song "Wings" by Macklemore has a very deep meaning to it. He talks about today's generation caring about things in life that aren't important like being popular in school. An example of what they do to try to fit in is buying the newest shoes and clothes. In the song, he says "My movement told me be a consumer and I consumed it, they told me to just do it, I listened to what that swoosh said." This line is powerful because he talks about the media taking advantage of kids and giving them happiness if they buy their product. What’s sad is he talks about what they would do anything to try and get these products, even kill someone over a pair of $100 sneakers. At the end of the song, he raps "What I wore, this is the source of my youth. This dream they sold to you. For a hundred dollars and some change. Consumption is in the veins. And now I see it's just another pair of shoes." This line is very big because he realizes that it isn’t necessary to spend so much time and money on trying to fit in because it does not matter at the end.

The Meaning of Music

Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror" does not only have catchy lyrics but it has a deeper meaning attached to it. The biggest argument that this song is making is if you change who you see in the mirror then you will see the world become with a better place. This song made people realize that their personal identity had a relationship or connection to society. The lyrics "If you wanna make the world a better place/ Take a look at yourself, and then make a change..." explain the argument perfectly.
